Mathematics camp for students opens

Accra, Aug. 17, GNA – A mathematics camp aimed to equip students of senior and junior high schools with practical knowledge and approach to the

study of the subject opened in Accra on Monday. The camp, the brain-child of Meagasa Mathematics Academy based at Lashibi, near Nungua, aims to encourage students to use mathematics to deal with

daily problems affecting their lives and society. Professor Sitsofe Anku, Founder and Executive Director of Meagasa, said the camp was designed to change the perception of students that Mathematics

was difficult and abstract. He said because students were taught mainly to pass their examinations, it became difficult for them to understand how to apply the principles in dealing

with everyday life situations. Professor Anku said one way to make mathematics enjoyable to students was to make it activity based to enable students to use their talents to deal with

different situations. There is also the need for teachers to upgrade their knowledge, methodology and content as well as allow students to experience mathematics in action at

various industries. The two-week camp is on the theme: “Maths is doable and enjoyable.”
