Maternal mortality rate has reduced in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality in the Western Region, Madam Victoria Toffey, a Public Health Nurse at the Municipal Health Directorate, said on Wednesday.
She said only one maternal death had been recorded in the municipality from January to June this year as against seven in 2013.
Madam Toffey told the GNA in an interview that the success could be attributed to the commitment of nurses and their preparedness to work in remote areas.
She said as the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipal Health Directorate was determined to reduce maternal death and would, therefore, intensify education in 15 communities in the municipality to ensure that every pregnant woman visited the antenatal clinic at least four times before delivery.
She said health education had been carried out at Esuaso, Benso, Kadawen, Akyem and Bonsa adding that education programmes in the remaining communities would be rescheduled after the raining season.
Madam Toffey said the Municipal Health Directorate intended opening more adolescents health centers and also intensify education in basic schools on adolescent sexuality, abstinence, teenage pregnancy and its effect on the adolescents.
She called on pregnant women to sleep in treated mosquito nets and deliver in hospitals to assist in reducing maternal mortality to the barest minimum.
