The returning officer of the Electoral Commission has declared NDC’s Bernard Bediako the winner of the Akwatia by-election with a total vote of 18,199, as against NPP’s Solomon Asumadu, who polled a total vote of 15,235. In percentage-wise terms, the NDC’s candidate won the election by 54.30% with the NPP’s candidate trailing with 45%.
Voting, which began at 7:00 a.m., was largely smooth across the constituency, with officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) confirming that all polling stations opened on time and were supplied with the necessary electoral materials.
50,000 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots; however, the total vote cast was 33,819.
Addressing the media after the declaration, the MP-elect promised to deliver on his mandate, with special attention to development within the Mining community of Akwatia.
“For me, I have always focused on the main ball. My focus is to have my message delivered. The people accepted it. They take it up and work to make sure victory is delivered,” he said.
“Akwatia’s name has always been associated with mining, but we have to do it lawfully. We are going to embark on massive development.”
