Mason jailed for possessing firearms

One Emmanuel Attah, Mason, was on Tuesday sentenced to three years imprisonment for possession of firearms by an Accra Circuit Court.

Emmanuel, who was said to have in his possession one locally manufactured pistol without lawful authority, pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea.

Presenting the facts of the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ernest Acheampong told the court that the complainant is a policeman stationed at Amasaman Police Station, while the convict is a mason residing at Olebu.

He said on August 8, this year the complainant was in charge of a team of policemen patrolling the Amasaman municipality.

The prosecution said at about 14:30 hours, at Oshuiman, the complainant and his men came across the convict and others working on a piece of land with bulldozers.

He told the court that, on seeing the police, the convict with two others tried to run away, but the police pursued them and were arrested.

DSP Acheampong said a search conducted on them revealed a locally manufactured pistol from the bag of Emmanuel, and so he was sent to the Amasaman police station for investigation.

He said in his caution statement, Emmanuel admitted the offence, saying the gun was his, and that he took it from his uncle at Adaklu in the Volta Region.
