It is erroneous on the part of the media to state that the late Dr Mrs Mary Grant was the first female medical doctor to emerge in Ghana, private legal practitioner Egbert Faibille Jnr., has said.
According to him, Dr Grant is adored in many circles but to attribute such accolade to her as some media publications have done was wrong.
He took to his Facebook wall on Monday September 19 to express his displeasure indicating that “Dr Susan Ofori Atta was rather the first Ghanaian female doctor”.
“Dr Susan Ofori Atta qualified as a doctor in 1949. Susan Ofori Atta House, an all girls’ house at Achimota School, her alma mater stands in her memory for that feat”, Mr Faibille Jnr said.
Dr Grant, on the other hand, Mr Faibille Jnr. said “was the first alumna of Wesley Girls High School to be a doctor”.
Dr Grant passed away on Sunday September 18, 2016 at the 37 Military Hospital. She was appointed Deputy Secretary of Health in 1985 in the Jerry John Rawlings-led PNDC regime. She was also a Deputy Minister of Health at a point in time. Dr Grant was also a Minister of Education and Culture.
She also chaired the National Council on Women and Development. Dr Grant was part of Ghana’s delegation to the Beijing women’s conference.
President Mahama described her as “a great woman of our modern era” as he expressed his condolence on Monday.
