Domeabra (Ash), Aug 25, GNA – Records at the Ministry of Fisheries show about 50 per cent drop in the quantity of fish obtained from marine fishing. Mr Papa Joe, Special Assistant to the Minister of Fisheries, said for the past three years the country’s marine fishing yielded 450 tonnes instead of the expected 850 tonnes and attributed the drop to bad weather conditions and bad behaviour of some residents who live by the sea side.
He was speaking at the close of a 10-day training workshop for 25 farmers on how to embark on integrated fish farming (aquaculture) in the Ejisu-Juaben District at the weekend. The training, which was organised by the Ministry of Fisheries in collaboration with Kuma Farms Complex, was attended by farmers selected from Ashanti, Greater Accra, Volta, Northern and Eastern regions and some students.
Mr Joe said the ministry had teamed up with some farm complexes to provide training on how to rear fish at the small-scale level. He said the ministry was prepared to offer loan facilities to the farmers to enable them expand.
Nana Kwaku Siaw, Director of Kuma Farms Complex at Domeabra, said the farm in collaboration with the ministry had trained over 500 farmers in fish rearing.
