Ghanaian winger Marcel Opoku says he is ready to make a significant contribution at Swedish club Assyriska FF after a career that has taken him from street football in Ghana to England and Spain.
The 24-year-old recently joined Assyriska FF following a spell with Spanish fourth-tier side CD Ricla. He believes the different football cultures he has experienced have helped shape both his style and understanding of the game.
Opoku says his football education began in Ghana, where playing on the streets encouraged him to develop creativity, instinct and confidence in possession. His subsequent time in England and Spain added tactical and technical elements to his game.
“It became a combination of street football instinct, English tactical sharpness and Spanish technical finesse that shaped me into the player I am today,” Opoku said, as quoted by the club’s website.
The winger describes himself as an intelligent and unpredictable attacker who is comfortable using either foot. He believes his qualities can give Assyriska FF an additional threat in the final third.
Opoku says his ability to shoot from distance, create chances and take on defenders in one-on-one situations will be important to the team. He also feels opposition players know they must be alert when he receives the ball in space on the wing.
At the same time, he wants his new team-mates to see him as someone capable of breaking defensive lines and producing opportunities even when under pressure.
His decision to move to Assyriska FF was shaped by the club’s history, ambition and passionate support. Opoku was already familiar with the club before completing the move and felt its competitive environment suited his own desire to progress.
He also believes football in Sweden can bring out the best in his game. His spell in Spain exposed him to a technical, possession-based style, while he considers Assyriska FF’s approach to be quicker and more physically demanding.
That balance reminds him in some respects of his experience in England, while also offering a different challenge from the football he encountered at CD Ricla.
Opoku’s immediate objective is to establish himself as a regular in the team. He plans to do that through hard work, strong fitness levels and consistent performances.
Competition for places within the squad is not something he views negatively. Instead, he sees it as an incentive to improve and maintain a high standard in training.
Although the winger has ambitions of eventually reaching the highest level of football, he is concentrating for now on helping Assyriska FF achieve its aims. He wants to contribute with goals, assists and dependable performances throughout the season.
Opoku has praised his new team-mates and the coaching staff for helping him settle into his new surroundings. He has also thanked the supporters for the passion they have shown and promised to work tirelessly in support of the club’s objectives this season.
