Manhyia Palace fines Daddy Lumba’s family head two sheep over great oath

The family head of the late highlife legend, Charles Kojo Fosu (Daddy Lumba), Kofi Owusu, has been fined two sheep by the Manhyia Palace after the musician’s sister, Ernestina Akosua Bimpomaa, invoked the Great Oath of the Asantehene.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, during a court hearing involving a case filed by Akosua Serwaa, the late musician’s first wife, challenging who should be recognized as Daddy Lumba’s lawful spouse.

After proceedings ended, Daddy Lumba’s sister invoked the Great Oath (Ntam Kɛseɛ), which, under Asante custom, automatically transfers the matter from the court to the Manhyia Palace for traditional adjudication.

At the sitting presided over by the Saamanhene and other chiefs at the Manhyia Palace on November 7,2025, family head Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu was fined two sheep for failing to contest or neutralize the invocation of the Great Oath.

According to Asante custom and tradition, once the Great Oath is invoked, the case must be settled at the Manhyia Palace, as no court has jurisdiction over matters tied to the Great Oath.

The sheep will be used by the chiefs to perform purification rites to revoke the oath and avert any potential spiritual consequences.

Meanwhile, the court case is expected to resume on November 12, 2025, for further hearing.
