Manager of cocoa buying company arrested

Mr Matthew Benyin, 36, Jubeso-Bia District Manager of Royal Commodities Company Limited, a private cocoa buying agency, has been arrested by the Debiso Police for allegedly stealing 187 bags of cocoa valued at over 45.5 million cedis.

His accomplice, Mr Joseph Kwaku Asare, 40, Assemblyman for Adabokrom, has also been arrested.

Mr Joseph Yaw Mensah, Produce Clerk of Adabokrom Federated Commodities Company Limited, also a private cocoa buying agency, whose cocoa was stolen told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Debiso on Monday that, he purchased and kept the produce in an abandoned Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) shed at Adabokrom in April.

Mr Mensah said on April 20, he found out that the shed had been broken into and the cocoa stolen.

He, therefore, reported the case to the Police and the suspects were arrested.

When Ghana News Agency contacted the Debiso Police, they confirmed the theft and said the suspects admitted stealing 136 bags of cocoa but not 187 bags as alleged by the complainant.

Police Chief Inspector Nantoma Sugri, Station Officer said the suspects were put before the Juabeso Community Tribunal and were remanded in custody adding that they would arraigned at the Tarkwa Circuit Tribunal since Community tribunal has limited jurisdiction.

It was alleged that Mr Benyin and his accomplice stole the cocoa to make up for a shortage of about 200 bags of cocoa, when his employers went round to inspect his purchases.
