Management of GHA to check overloading on trunk roads

Accra, April 30, GNA – Management of Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) i= s stepping up efforts to check overloading on trunk roads to ensure roads i= n the country served their designed live span. As part of the efforts, management is deploying mobile Axel Load Van= s and weighing pads to complement permanent weighing bridges already in use= on various trunk roads across the country.

Mr Nicholas Dome Brown, Axel Load Control Manager of GHA, who disclo= sed this to the Ghana News Agency during demonstration of the Mobile Axel Loa= d Vans at the on-going Ghana Policy Fair, said government was determined to=

preserve investments in road infrastructure.

He said government intended to ensure it reduced overloading on trun= k roads because of the excessive damage the illegality was exerting on transport infrastructure, leading to the fast deterioration of roads. Mr Brown explained that Mobile Axel Load Vans would enable GHA to undertake spot checks on trunk roads and discourage overloading on the roads. He said when a vehicle was found to be overloaded after an axel load=

check, the extra merchandise would be discharged from the vehicle and the=

owner slapped with a penalty. “The idea is that we would check overloading at loading points and o= n the trunk roads to ensure that people comply with axel load limits,” he said.
