Man,43, remanded for duping women after promising marriage

A 43-year-old man has been remanded into police custody by a Suhum court for swindling ten different women of several thousands of Cedis under the guise of marriage.

Stephen Gyamfi allegedly took the monies from the desperate women after promising to marry them. He, according to the prosecution, impressed upon each of his victims to invest in his car business in order to make the marriage possible.

He is expected to reappear in court on February 4.

Gyamfi was arrested on January 21 at Zebila in the Upper East region upon a tip-off after a Suhum-based teacher reported to the Police that he had defrauded her of an amount of GHC50,268.00.

Briefing the media on the story, Supt. Muchiraru Yahaya, the Suhum Municipal Police Commander said the police upon their interrogation, gathered that the suspect had managed to defraud over ten women who are all in search of marriages under the pretext of marrying them.

According to him, the teacher who has been duped took loans from different banks and gave them to the suspect to invest in his business. He said the teacher, whose name has been withheld, will not receive her salary for the next four years since they will be used to service the loans.
