Asamankese (E/R), April 13, GNA – The Asamankese Circuit Court has remanded Kwame Oppong, a petty trader in custody on two separate theft cases.
He pleaded not guilty to five counts of unlawful entry, stealing, and causing harm and is to re-appear on April 21, this year. Oppong was accused of stealing a tape recorder player valued at 600,000 cedis, an amount of 500,000 cedis cash and a loud speaker also valued at 200,000 cedis from a drinking bar at Asamankese. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector J.F Idan told the court that on the night of April 4, this year, the bar attendant of a bar at Asamankese left the bar to attend nature’s call. He said during the brief absence, the accused entered the bar and stole the items but in the process of transporting them, the bar attendant arrived.
Chief Inspector Idan said on seeing the attendant, the accused took to his heel but some neighbours chased and arrested him. According to him, when he was searched for the alleged missing money nothing was found on him and was therefore sent to the police station.
Mr Idan said Oppong had earlier on February 4, this year, entered the room of Madam Gina Mamanye and stole a bag containing her personal effects valued at about 3.1 million cedis and a cash of 810,000 cedis. He said some people reported seeing Oppong leaving the room with the bag and when Mr Kofi Adu, Gina’s boy friend rushed to the accused room, he saw him with the bag. Chief Inspector Idan said when Mr Adu demanded that the bag be given to him, the accused refused but rather beat him up.
