Man hangs over poverty

A 57-year-old painter committed suicide at BBC, a suburb of Kronom Kwapra, near Kumasi on Thursday morning.

Kwadwo Acheampong, popularly called ‘Burger,’ was found hanging around 6am.

It’s unclear what compelled him to end his life and he did not leave behind any note, Maxwell Agyepong, a resident disclosed.

But the widow believes adverse poverty and ailment, which afflicted Burger for sometime might have compelled him to take such action.

The incident astounded the residents of the area, who said the deceased did not show any signs of depression.

According to reports, the widow, who was frightened, shouted when she saw the body of her husband which attracted many people to the scene.

The sorrowful Ama Nkrumah said her husband ate well on Wednesday evening before going to bed without showing any sign of anxiety or depression.

According to her, “Burger suddenly woke up to urinate and returned to bed and I also slept.”

Ama Nkrumah said when she woke up around 6am on Thursday, the door had been locked from outside with Burger nowhere to be found.

She said she called Burger severally to open the door for her but there was no response.

The widow noted that one Oforiwaa, a young girl in the area, heard her shouts and opened the door for her.

Oforiwaa, who found Burger hanging, called Ama Nkrumah to have a look.

The widow said she later informed other people in the area after which they reported the disturbing matter to the chief of the town.

Ama Nkrumah said the case was subsequently reported to the police who visited the scene to transport the body to mortuary for autopsy.

The widow claimed adverse poverty and ailment forced Burger to commit suicide.
