Man gets nine years for blinding woman over rejection

Techiman, April 28, GNA – A circuit court in Techiman, presided over by Mr. Michael Kuodjo Ntumy, has sentenced a 24 year old driver to nine years imprisonment in hard labour for causing harm to a woman who refused his love proposal.

Kwame Nyarko pleaded guilty to the charge of intentionally causing harm to the woman, Madam Sara Owusu, a trader.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant David Alhassan, told the court that at about 2300 hours on March 30, this year, Nyarko met the woman at Kenten in Techiman and proposed love to her but she rejected.

He said Nyarko without any cause gave a hefty slap on her left eye and this rendered her temporarily blind. The woman reported the incident to the police who gave her a medical form to attend hospital. The report indicated that her sight was totally impaired. Passing sentence, Mr. Ntumy noted that Nyarko’s behaviour was “strange” and the woman could institute civil action against him (Nyarko) after serving the sentence. 28 April 09
