Man convicted for neglecting his children

An Accra District Court has imposed a fine of GHC360 on a trader for failing to supply basic needs, such as food, health, education and shelter for his five kids.

Ali Zebo, a trader would in default go to jail for 10 days.

Prosecuting Detective Sergeant Simon Tekpor told the Court presided over by Mr. Worlanyo Kotoku that complainant is a 32-year-old petty trader residing at James Town, Accra.

Accused, prosecution said, is also a 42-year-old petty trader residing at Mataheko also in Accra.

The accused and complainant divorced five years ago but have five kids between the ages of 15, 13, 10, 8 and six and half.

Prosecution said accused for the past five years has failed to provide for his children.

According to the prosecutor several efforts made by the complainant and other family members for the accused person to take responsibility of his children have failed.

During the month of March last year, the complainant reported the matter to the family tribunal and the court ordered him to pay GHC500 a month for upkeep of the kids with effect with from June 2016 but he defaulted.

Prosecution said a report was made to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit and accused person was arrested and arraigned.
