Man complains of wrongful removal of name from voters’ register

A 59-year-old man in the Ashanti Region capital of Kumasi has descended heavily on the Electoral Commission (EC) for what he says is a wrongful expunction of his name from the voters’ register.

Owusu Agyemang says he did not register with a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card but has had his name published among the 7,106 in the Region.

The Commission expunged over 56,000 names of voters who used NHIS cards to register from the national roll in fulfillment of a Supreme Court order.

Mr Agyemang says the last time he even got an NHIS-card was in 2015 prior to the district level elections. He said he has been a registered voter since 2000.

But EC officials contacted by TV3’s William Evans Nkum on Monday, July 18 said there is little the regional office can do in the circumstance.

“These deletions have been done by the Commission at the headquarters,” the EC official said.

“I don’t know what he is talking about. I believe we have done what must be done.”

The official said those whose names have been deleted have another opportunity between July 18 and July 28 to re-register.
