Man charged with possessing narcotic drugs weeps in court

Accra, April 26, GNA – A phone repairer, Mohammed Abdulai Aziz, on Tuesday broke down in tears in court when he was charged with allegedly possessing a quantity of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Aziz wept uncontrollably saying he knew nothing about the 22 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis that were found in his possession.

Aziz and Ebenezer Marbell pleaded not guilty to the charge of possessing narcotic drugs.

An accomplice, Mohammed Habibu, a 47-year old porter, was charged with using narcotic drugs. He, however, denied the offence but told the court that the dried leaves belonged to his fianc=E9 called Abena. The court remanded all the three to reappear on May 11. Chief Inspector Samuel Sarkwah told the court that on April 20 , the police and military conducted a raid at Tudu in Accra to clamp down on activities of drug peddlers.

During the raid, Marbell and Aziz were arrested in the same room. When the room was searched 22 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis were found.

The prosecutor said in the case of Habibu, he was arrested in a different room after a sniffing dog had pulled out the leaves in the room.

Inspector Sarkwah said the drugs, which were sealed in the presence of the accused persons, had since been forwarded to the Ghana Standards Board for analytical examination.
