A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 50-year old trader, who used the name of an orphanage to dupe the Bomso Clinic of GH¢200.00, to three years imprisonment in hard labour.
William Oppong pleaded guilty to the offence.
Chief Inspector Isaac Mensah Appenteng, told the court presided over by Justice William Boampong that, the convict presented himself to the clinic as a staff of the Remar Orphanage and Rehabilitation Centre at Bomso, Kumasi, with forged documents to solicit for funds in support of the upkeep of the children on July 28, last year.
He succeeded in collecting an amount of GH¢200.00 and on March 23, he again went to the facility with the same appeal.
This time the accountant became suspicious and asked him to return at a later date to pick an amount of GH¢500.00.
After the convict had left, the accountant decided to check from the management of the orphanage if indeed Oppong was acting on its behalf.
There, his suspicions were confirmed as it came to light that he was an impostor with no relationship with the Orphanage.
A formal report was therefore made to the police and when he came back on the appointed day for the promised cash he was arrested.**
