Mampong (Ash), June 1, GNA – A total of 19,149 children below age five have received immunisation against Poliomyelitis (Polio) at Mampong and other Sub-Districts. Among the Sub-Districts covered were Adidwan, Kofiase, Yonso and Krobo. Mr. Kofi Damoah, Nutrition Officer at the Mampong Municipal Health Directorate, in an interview with Ghana News Agency said 160 Volunteers making up of health personnel and some community members undertook the immunisation exercise in the municipality. He noted that community members have been cooperative with the exercise and this had helped to reduce Polio cases drastically in the Municipality. He explained that polio is an infectious disease that commonly causes lameness in the arms, legs or upper part of the body adding that it affects the nerves and muscles of the body causing paralysis. With time the affected limbs become thin and short. Polio, which he said is caused by a virus, is passed from person to person through faeces and can also be infected through contact with an infected person or by drinking or eating food contaminated with faeces. Mr. Damoah advised that all children are immunised against the six killer diseases including, Polio. He called on parents and all stakeholders to help get rid of the disease.
