‘Male judges were not happy with Chief Justice’ – MP

Some male judges in the country were not happy with the leadership style of former Chief Justice, Georgina Wood due to her gender bias posturing.

The former Chief Justice was largely seen by judges of the superior courts judicature to be acting in favor of their female counterparts, a situation that created some level of uneasiness.

This was disclosed by lawyer and Member of Parliament for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo Markin in an interview. According to Afenyo Markin, the former Chief Justice was not liked by some male judges due to her soft spot for female judges.

The former Ghanaian Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, revealed how she endured heated calls on her to resign during the late President John Evans Atta Mills’ administration.

Georgina Wood, who retired June 8, 2017 after ten years of service as Chief Justice of Ghana, said members in the late John Evans Atta Mills government constantly pressured her to step down because she was appointed by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

But the lawyer said, “I am reliably aware some male members of the bench never liked her because of her appetite to empower more female judges than their male counterparts.”

“I have had the opportunity to speak to some of the judges and clearly you could feel the anxiety in them because they saw a lot of their female judges being empowered at their expense,” he revealed.

“But to some extent one would understand her because of the huge deficit that existed and so there was need to bridge that gap.”

Alexander Afenyo Markin however said the Chief Justice while service in office executed her task diligently to the admiration of many.

He however said there may be many who were not satisfied with her leadership style including some male judges.
