Sunyani (B/A), April 18, GNA – Mr Mahalil Baharam, Malaysian High Commissioner to Ghana, has expressed dismay about the practice by some traditional authorities in the country to engage in litigation over lands acquired by foreign investors for their commercial ventures. He noted that such behaviour of the traditional authorities tended to deter foreign investors from investing in the country.
Mr Baharam expressed the concern when he and Mr Mold Rashid Yahaya, his second secretary, paid a courtesy call on Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, who is Ghana’s Ambassador-designate to Malaysia on Tuesday to discuss potential areas of development in both countries.
He said Ghana was noted as the friendliest country among others by the Malaysian government but her weak economy demanded a concerted effort of the government, private sector and civil organizations. Mr Baharam said his government was willing to help modernize Ghana’s agricultural sector through the provision of modern agricultural inputs and the necessary support to boost farming activities.
The High Commissioner stressed the need to enhance the country’s infrastructure development that would attract and encourage tourists to visit the country to improve eco-tourism for increased foreign exchange earnings.
Mr Baharam said plans were afoot by his government to send more Malaysian experts to assist Ghana in the various infrastructure development.
Nana Seinti thanked the Malaysian government for its concern for Ghana’s economy and expressed the hope that the cordial relationship between both countries would be strengthened.
He reiterated government’s commitment and preparedness to embrace foreign investors to help accelerate national development.
Nana Seinti later led the Malaysian diplomats to inspect the operations of Yedent Agro-Processing Ventures Limited, a maize storage and processing plant in Sunyani.
Mr Felix Engmann, General Manager of the company said maize storage and processing was the basic agenda of the company, but intended to process other grains like sorghum and soya beans to improve their quality for export.
Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Kwame Twumasi-Awuah, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive and Mr Kwasi Anan-Frimpong, Municipal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation accompanied the team.
