Assin Foso. (C/R) Feb.24, GNA – Malaria, hypertension, diahorrea, anaemia and diabetes topped the list of cases reported at the out patient department of the health delivery centres in the Assin North and South districts at the close of last year.
According to Dr. Nii Adjei Adjetey, Assin District Director of Health Services 18,769 cases of malaria, 4835 of hypertension and 2040 of diahorrea were reported, while those registered for anaemia and diabetes were 2005 and 1558 respectively.
Dr. Adjetey disclosed these data, while leading a discussion on the state of health service delivery in the two districts of Assin with stakeholders at a forum held at Assin Foso on Wednesday.
The participants reviewed the performance of the health service outfit in the two areas and offered suggestions on the way forward. The director said 88 AIDS cases involving 37 married couples, 18 single persons, 18 divorced persons, 14 widows and one child were recorded, while those for tuberculosis was 238 for the same period. He agreed with the participants that with the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, an intensified education programme on the preventive case of these diseases could help reduce the number of reported cases.
The participants called for an institution of frequent health “cleanliness week” during which period the communities could be mobilised to clean their environment, particularly the mosquito breeding spots and stagnant water courses.
Dr Atem Dhal Geu of the St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Foso, said with the institution of the National Health Insurance Scheme patients have no cause to stay at home and allow their illness to worsen before the reported to the hospital for treatment because the usual excuse of having no money does not arise any longer.
Miss Elizabeth Tenkorang, presiding member of the Assin North district assembly, who chaired the function pledged the readiness of the assembly to support the environmental Health Department of the assembly with logistics and funds to enable it to carry out its functions.
