Malaria, hypertension cases increase in Agona West Municipality

The Agona Swedru Municipal Government Hospital recorded 17,863 malaria cases in 2012 as against 15,016 in 2011, Dr Nii Adjei Adjetey, Agona West Municipal Director of Health Services has said.

He said this at the Agona West 2012 Annual Health Performance Review Conference at Agona Swedru at the weekend.

He attributed the increase to non-usage of mosquito nets supplied free of charge by the Ministry of health by the residents.

He said malaria tops 10 cases of the out-patient department (OPD) at the health facility due to poor sanitation in the Municipality.

Dr Adjetey therefore appealed to the Agona West Municipal Assembly to resource the Environmental Health Directorate to support the good work the Zoomlion Company was doing in the area.

He said hypertension was second top case with a total of 2,364 cases in 2012 followed by typhoid with 1,309 cases in the same year.

Dr Adjetey expressed concern about the huge indebtedness to health centres by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), which was affecting the operation of such facilities.

He said the last payment was made in August last year and appealed to the Chief Executive Officer of NHIA to ensure service providers get their rewards to enable them to render quality services to the clients.

He said the suppliers were pursuing them seriously to collect their monies and described the situation as pity.

Dr Adjetey praised the former Member of Parliament for Agona West, Mr Samuel Kweku Obodai for effective utilization of his share of National Health Insurance Fund for the construction and expansion of Agona Health Centre and provision of generating plants for all health centers in the Municipality.
