Malaria Complications Idenfied As Major Cause Of Death In Axim

Axim (Western Region) 24, Sept. Assembly members have been asked to educate the electorate on how malaria is spread to counteract traditional beliefs on convulsion, which is often a complication of malaria. Dr Godwin Yao Afenyadu, Nzema East District Director of Health Services, made this call when he addressed the district Assembly at Axim yesterday. He said 36 out of every 100 deaths recorded in hospitals are due to complications of malaria. Speaking on the socio-economic impact of the disease in terms of loss of man-hours and school attendance, he said that most vulnerable sections of the population are pre-school children, pregnant women and the aged. Dr Afenyadu said in spite of these facts, malaria has been taken for granted throughout the Country.
