Dr K.K. Hussein, Director of Health Services for the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma district, on Tuesday said reported cases of malaria in the area have reduced from 68 per cent in 2001 to 59 per cent last year.
He said the development was as a result of the hard work of trained community-based surveillance volunteers and the intensification of malaria awareness and education campaign in schools and communities in the area.
Dr Hussein was speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people of Pramso to launch this year’s roll back malaria campaign and the insecticide treated mosquito nets in the district.
He said the roll back malaria campaign was aimed at reducing the incidence of the disease by half by 2010.
Dr Kyei Farried, acting Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, said malaria remained the number cause of death especially among children in the country and appealed to the people to maintain environmental cleanliness to prevent the disease.
Mr Bright Addai-Mununkum, the District Chief Executive, in an address read for him, said the assembly had released 20 million cedis for the fight against malaria while some sanitary facilities were being constructed in communities and schools.
