Make unit committees more functional to strengthen assemblies – Odoom

Elmina, June 14, GNA – Mr Kish Odoom, a former local government official, has stressed the need for unit committees to be made more functional to strengthen the performance of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

He said the functions of the unit committees as stipulated by the Local Government ACT 462 of 1993, enjoins them to assist in revenue collection, organize communal and voluntary work and educate the people on their rights and obligations.

Mr Odoom who made the call at a day’s orientation workshop for new Assembly Members of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, said the unit committees should be provided with resources to enable them perform their functions.

The workshop was to introduce the new Assembly Members to the rules, regulations, the legal functions and standing orders of the Assembly.

Mr Odoom, who was the resource person of the workshop, called on the Assembly Members to strive to promote the wellbeing of their communities instead of their individual interests in order to make governance at the local level more meaningful.

He said the staff of the decentralized departments under the Assemblies should provide technical expertise for local level development.
