Majority MPs hail Supreme Court decision

Some Members of Parliament on the majority side of the house have told XYZ News the decision of the Supreme Court to throw out an interlocutory injunction seeking to stop parliament from sitting on CI 78 was expected.

The CI 78, a Constitutional Instrument meant to give legal backing to the constituencies is currently before Parliament. Giving a ruling on Wednesday, Justice Julius Ansah said the court is unable to interfere in the parliamentary proceedings concerning the creation of the 45 constituencies.

In an interview with XYZ News, MP for Talensi, Hon. John Tia Akologu, said the court action was much ado about nothing.

“I am not surprised that the court has done that because the court is the last place for us to settle all kinds of issues when it comes to the interpretation of issues,” he averred.

He said the Electoral Commission has already stated that its actions are not in contravention with the constitution of Ghana and therefore have not breached any law.

He therefore believes parliament now has a clear opening to go on with its work in going through the CI and passing it to create the constituencies barring any mishaps.

On his part, MP for Juaboso in the Western Region, Hon. Sampson Ahi, said the injunction application was a non-starter and the decision by the court is a welcome news.
