Ghana’s Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has called on Parliamentary Committees to address a backlog of 32 outstanding legislative referrals, urging timely submission of departmental and agency reports for parliamentary scrutiny.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the presentation of the Business Statement for the sixth week ending July 3, 2025, Ayariga emphasized the importance of committees fulfilling their oversight responsibilities.
“The Business Committee has noted that there are 32 outstanding referrals before the committees. Chairpersons must prioritize addressing this backlog to ensure timely reporting to Parliament,” Ayariga stated.
He also urged Committees to thoroughly review the legislation governing various departments and agencies to ensure adherence to reporting obligations.
In addition to addressing the backlog, Ayariga highlighted the tragic drowning of seven students in the Black Volta River, which had been brought to the House’s attention by Lawra MP Hon. Bede Anwataazumo Ziedeng. He announced that the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, have been directed to brief Parliament on measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The ministers are scheduled to present their reports to Parliament on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
These developments reflect Parliament’s commitment to ensuring effective legislative oversight and addressing urgent national issues with transparency and accountability.
