Major cause of poverty among farmers

Akim Oda (E/R), Sept 16, GNA – The National Chairman of the Citrus Growers and Marketing Association (CGMA), Mr Appiah Amankwaah, has said lack of market for farm produce is the major cause of poverty among farmers.

He said the Association is determined to reverse the trend by bringing all citrus farmers together and train them on how to grow quality citrus for export.

Mr Amankwaah, who was closing a three-day training programme for 70 citrus farmers drawn from the Birim South District, said the demand for oranges on the international market is very high.

The training programme was organised by the Association in collaboration with the African Project Development Facility and Agriculture Development and International Centre for Soil Fertility and Agriculture Development.

Miss Georgina Koomson of Ideal Providence Farms, Tema, one of the resource persons at the workshop later took the participants through topics such as importance of citrus planting materials, different types of citrus and budding techniques.
