Mahama’s gov’t not truthful to workers

The current labour strike embarked on by the 12 unions is hinged on the lack of confidence and credibility of government.

This could be traced to government’s handling of the 2nd tier pension scheme which is the core of the labour unrest.

The situation were fueled by government spokespersons who contradicted each other on the total amount accrued from the Fund.

A Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Lawyer Adomako Barfi speaking on the morning show of the Rainbow Radio International: FRONTLINE said, government’s attitude rather created a high suspicion of embezzled fund.

He said, government refused to tell labour front how much has been realized from the deductions of their meagre salaries and the interest within the past four years, until pressure was brought to bear on it.

Whereas the Finance Minister says the Bank of Ghana was collating the data, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, quotes GHC 440 million cedis and yet, the Chief Executive of the National Pensions Regulatory Commission has also revealed that, the Fund is GHC 1.6b raising concerns within the labour front.

The suspicions according Lawyer Barfi, hinges on the fact that, government has not been able to honour statutory payments and owes the SNNIT to the tune of GHC 800 million.

He also raised suspicions of the credibility of some of the Fund members of the Board that were appointed solely by government.
