President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the government will begin clearing arrears owed to road contractors before the end of July, in a move aimed at revitalising key infrastructure projects across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with the Council of State at the Jubilee House on Monday, President Mahama said the decision follows dedicated financial allocations by the Ministry of Finance, which will be used to settle a substantial portion of the long-standing debts.
“Clearing these arrears is critical to ensuring that contractors can return to their sites and resume work without further delays,” the President stated.
The pledge comes amid growing public concern over abandoned roadworks and deteriorating infrastructure, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas where incomplete projects have affected transportation, trade, and access to services.
President Mahama noted that many contractors have been forced to halt operations due to non-payment for completed works, leading to layoffs and cost overruns that affect both the companies and the broader economy.
“We understand the financial distress many of our contractors are under. This intervention is a signal that government is committed to not just development, but also honouring our obligations,” he added.
The Council of State, in its response, welcomed the government’s renewed commitment to infrastructure development and urged transparency and accountability in disbursing the funds.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways is expected to publish a roadmap in the coming days detailing the schedule and prioritisation of payments to affected contractors.
The move is seen as part of President Mahama’s broader efforts to stimulate economic growth and job creation through strategic investments in infrastructure.
