President John Mahama will today, Tuesday May 7, 2013 meet the leadership of the Kantamanto market which was ravaged by fire on Sunday resulting in the loss of goods running into millions of Ghana cedis.
The President, who according to sources within the Flagstaff House, was given a full briefing of the outbreak upon his return from South Africa last night, requested to meet the traders over the crisis.
Currently the traders are at daggers drawn with city authorities over a decision by the latter to relocate them to different market centres in the capital.
The meeting with the president this afternoon, according to sources is to enable him to commiserate with the traders and also explore avenues of resolving the impasse between them and the Accra metropolitan Assembly.
It took a combined team of police officers and Soldiers to disperse a crowd of traders who resisted attempts by the city authorities to cordon off the burnt market.
The traders insist they will not allow the government to rebuild the market as they fear the stalls will either be distributed to political cronies or sold out at extortionist prices.
