President Mahama has defended his choice of Human Rights activist, Nana Oye Lithur, for the position of Gender, Children and Social Protection minister.
There has been public objections to her nomination with some clerics calling on the appointments committee to disapprove her.
They argue that her liberal stance on homosexuality is at variance with the country’s culture. But Nana Oye Lithur was approved together with four other ministers-designate by parliament on Friday.
Responding to a question as to whether the president has regretted nominating Mrs. Lithur due to the brouhaha surrounding her appointment, the Information Minister Mahama Ayariga told XYZ News the president has no regrets whatsoever.
He said the president nominated her due to “her background in human rights advocacy, her personal commitment to the struggle and suffering of victims of human rights violations…will inure to her benefit.”
According to Mr. Ayariga, apart from she being a renowned activists, Mrs Lithur now “has the machinery of the state behind her, to support her, to enable her also make provision for the protection of these rights through the mandate of social protection.”
