Mahama downplays endorsement from Chiefs

President John Dramani Mahama says what chiefs in the north say about his opponent “is not really what is important”.

“It is what the people say.”

He said the ground work done by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the north puts the party far ahead of any other ahead of the December 7 elections.

President Mahama was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana on Tuesday, September 6.

This was in reaction to the seemingly unanimous skin endorsements received by the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in his recent tour of the north.

The overlord of Bole was among skins that lent credence to Nana Akufo-Addo’s candidature.

But President Mahama said the three northern regions have seen tremendous improvement in road construction over the past four years under his administration.

“If you go to the three northern regions we have done a lot,” he told host Paul Adom-Otchere.

President Mahama mentioned the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba road and the unprecedented road connection “to join two northern regional capitals” of Wa and Bolgatanga as key in the road projects embarked upon in the north.

‘1-village, 1-dam’

He said irrigation dams are being constructed all over the north which does not warrant any promise of one village to get one dam.

President Mahama consequently descended on the ‘One-Village, One-Dam’ promise of Nana Akufo-Addo, saying it is clumsy and can only be understood if the party’s manifesto comes out.

He said there are dams already in the north and even those have become dugouts.

“The problem even now is not dugouts. It is desilting.”
