Mahama commissions Bolga-Pulmakong road

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of the Bolga-Pulmakong road at Zebilla in the Upper East Region.

The ceremony, which was held on Monday July 11, forms part of the president’s Accounting to the People tour. The 111km highway when completed will link the eastern corridor road at Kulungugu.

“It is an important link to the eastern corridor roads. We are constructing various sections of the road and the last section will run from Nankpanduri all the way to Kulungugu and there will be a link between this (Bolga-Pulmakong) road and eastern corridor road so that those from Bawku who want to go to the south will have another alternative,” he noted.

He said the road would aid in the movement of goods and services, especially agricultural produce, during the harvesting season from the markets to the towns.

Mr Mahama assured that funding was available hence any delay in the road project would not be due to funding.

While commencing the two-day tour of the region, Mr Mahama further announced the start of the Bawku Water Project, aimed at providing potable water for Bawku and its surrounding communities.

“This is the first step to expanding the existing water system, which was producing 1,200 cubic metres of water daily. It has been upgraded to produce 4,000 cubic metres to meet beyond 40 per cent of the demand,” he stressed.

According to him, the Ghana Water Company will also treat water from the White Volta in addition to the other projects to ensure sufficient water supply for the entire Bawku town.

He also announced that measures had been put in place for the construction of a dam to provide water for farmlands in order to boost production of agricultural products during the dry season in the region.

“This dam will irrigate 1000 hectares of land,” he added.
