President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive for the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations to political appointees, in what is being described as a bold move to reduce government spending and promote fiscal discipline.
The announcement, which comes amid growing public concern over rising living costs and government expenditure, is part of a broader effort to realign public spending with national priorities under the new administration.
According to sources within the Office of the President, the directive takes effect immediately and applies to all categories of political appointees, including ministers, deputies, CEOs of state-owned enterprises, and special advisors.
Ghanaians have long criticised what they see as excessive privileges granted to political elites, particularly in times of economic difficulty. The president’s latest move is already generating public approval, with many calling it a necessary first step in rebuilding trust in government.
Civil society groups and anti-corruption advocates have hailed the announcement as a welcome shift toward accountability and transparency.
