The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has called on President John Dramani Mahama, the winner of the 2012 Presidential Elections and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the runner-up of the elections, to openly pledge to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court.
Speaking at a workshop in Accra on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, Chairman of the Council Right Reverend Francis Amenu stated that it is only when the two pledge to accept the verdict of the Court that their supporters will follow suit.
“We call on President John Mahama and Nana Addo…to educate, encourage and sensitize their followers [on the outcome of the verdict],” he said.
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church also asked Ghanaians to maintain the peace in the country.
Bitter for some, sweet for others
The immediate past Chairman of the Council, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, stressed that in seeking justice at the Supreme Court, Ghanaians should be ready for victory for one party and defeat for another.
“[It] is going to be bitter for some people and sweet [for others],” he emphasized.
“But at the end of the day, we must educate Ghanaians to understand that it is Ghana that wins,” he pointed out.
After President Mahama was declared winner of the 2012 Elections, leadership of the New Patriotic Party headed to court to challenge the results.
The party’s flagbearer, Nana Addo, his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the party’s chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, petitioned the country’s highest court of jurisprudence over the results declared on Sunday, December 9, 2012 by Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission.
The court has considered every phase of the petition since it was filed on December 28, 2012 and it is getting ready to deliver its ruling.
Before it does that, parties are expected to orally clarify their cases in court on August 7/8, 2013.
