Accra, June 20, GNA – The Madina Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Paul Ayitey, has called on the government to properly resource the Police Service to enhance its operations towards efficiency.
Mr Ayitey said the world becoming a global village had come with crime related issues coupled with population increase in the country thus making it difficult for the police to effectively control crime and flush out criminals in communities. The Divisional Commander, who made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, at Madina, said crimes such as armed robbery, car snatching and cyber crime, were major problems in the Madina area and that the police had limited logistics to control the spate of crime in the community.
Chief Supt Ayitey, therefore, appealed to the government to intervene to facilitate the smooth operations of his outfit and the Police Service in general.
He, however, gave the assurance that in spite of these constraints, the Police are committed to putting in place measures to deal with situations that arise in the Madina area, and mentioned the Madina Zongo-Junction riots as one of such situations. He charged assembly members and community chiefs to support the police towards the restoration of calm and tranquility in the Madina District.
Chief Supt Ayitey also called for closer collaboration between the judiciary and the police to work towards meeting the expectation of the citizenry regarding the number of cases that are pending in the courts.
He asked taxi drivers and car hiring agents to be wary of people who approach them to for their services and advised them to be vigilant to avoid car snatchers and other criminals and always report suspects to the police.
Chief Supt Ayitey welcomed the news that the Ghana Police Service would recruit 16,000 policemen between now and 2014 to enhance its operations and urged the youth to take up the challenge to join the Service. 20 June 11
