Accra, Feb. 23, GNA – Ghana Standards Board (GSB) in collaboration with Road Safety Limited (RSL) has installed new machines to improve road safety.
The Tecalemit DE5000 Roller Brake tester, headlight beam tester and exhaust gas analyser, which are to improve road safety, have been installed on the Fishing Habour Road in Tema.
The Roller Brake tester has the capacity to test vehicles with axle load ranging from 400 to 16,000 kilograms.
The machines acquired by GSB with the assistance of the World Bank at a cost of about 36,000 pounds would soon be commissioned. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday, Mr Adu Darkwa Executive Director of GSB said the machines were installed with the cooperation of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Mr Michael Dedey, General Manager of RSL, said the exhaust gas analyzer would be tested on diesel vehicles.
He noted that about 70 per cent of the accident cases on our road were due to driver errors and could be prevented if vehicles especially the heavy goods trucks were serviced regularly to ensure that all their brakes, headlights and other parts were functioning properly. Mr Dedey said the company had since its inception in 1998 been involved in reducing vehicular accidents through its vehicle inspection and brake testing, installation of fleet management, tracking and fuel monitoring units, driver testing, training and monitoring of light and heavy good vehicles.
He called for the need to improve the safety and efficiency of the fleets of various companies to help reduce vehicle accidents, which had become very rampant on our roads. 23 Feb. 07
