Machecki.com working against our objectives – EC

An online application developed by local software developers at machecki.com to assist the electorate in Ghana find out if their names had been taken off the register of voters was working against the objectives of the Electoral Commission (EC) to get voters visiting exhibition centres to verify their details, Eric Dzakpasu, Public Relations Director for the EC, has said.

In view of this, the election management body has warned the general public to desist from using such application in the voter exhibition exercise.

With machecki.com, a voter is asked to enter his voter ID number or National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) ID number to ascertain whether or not one’s name was on the roll.

But speaking on Multi TV’s Newsfile, Saturday July 23, Mr Dzakpasu said: “The first time I went to that app [application] and I read it, under it machecki.com indicated that this app had nothing to do with the Electoral Commission, it is not sanctioned by the Electoral Commission, and they are not doing it in collaboration with the Electoral Commission.”

He added: “So, therefore, it will be dangerous for the Electoral Commission to endorse what we have not sanctioned and what we are not part. We have no hands in the operations of machecki.com.

“…Somewhere, macheki has indicated that once you have checked from their app, it is no longer necessary even for you to go to the exhibition centres; this is working directly against our objectives.

“We are saying that getting the register updated, cleaning the register is a collective responsibility. All stakeholders must get involved and, therefore, we are encouraging all voters to go to the registration centre and do what is expected of them.”
