Low power voltage affecting water supply in Kumasi

Kumasi, Mar 2, GNA – Low power voltage is affecting the flow of wate= r to the Kumasi metropolis from the two main headwork’s, Barekese and Owabi= .. The two water works have the capacity to supply a total of 27 millio= n gallons of water a day but at present they produce about 18 million gallo= ns. Mr Timothy Nettey, Project Manager, Kumasi Water and Rehabilitation Expansion, said this when he briefed the Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Opoku-Manu, efforts being made by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to improve the water situation in the metropolis.

The Dutch Government made available 37 million Euros towards the expansion works at the Barekese headwork. These involved installation of filters, lift pumps, clarifiers and t= he construction of booster stations and an additional aerator. Mr Opoku-Manu was there to acquaint himself with operations at the headworks. Mr Nettey said the inability to receive full complement of electrici= ty has become a major headache and that they require 415 voltages to run the=

pumps but currently doing with less than 390. Mr Opoku-Manu said a joint meeting with the Regional Directors of th= e Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta River Authority (VRA) and GWCL would be held to address the situation. He said he was satisfied with the expansion carried out at the headworks. 2 March 10
