Pro-opposition pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) will on Friday, September 16, organise a rally at Okaishie Drug Lane in Accra to commemorate the first anniversary of their demonstration to demand a credible voters’ register.
On September 16, 2015, the LMVCA, in collaboration with the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), Movement for Change, the opposition New Patriotic Party, Progressive People’s Party, People’s National Convention and other civil society groups, held a demonstration to present a petition to the Electoral Commission of Ghana to demand a credible voters’ register for the 2016 elections.
The peaceful demonstration was disrupted when the police and security operatives charged on the demonstrators with guns, batons, hot water cannons and tear gas for attempting to veer off the approved route, leading to several casualties.
The LMVCA, in a statement signed by convener David Asante, said the rally, thus, is in commemoration of “that fateful day when a peaceful demonstration was marred by the brute force of the security operatives”.
The alliance has extended an invitation to all Ghanaians to attend the rally for a progress report on the demand for a credible, free, fair, open and transparent election. The alliance will also unveil a line-up of activities in the lead-up to December 7, with the aim of strengthening democracy in the country and improving the electoral process.
