Lightning reportedly kills three in Bawku

Binduri (U/E), June 6, GNA – Three persons died during a severe rainstorm and lightning that hit two villages in the Bawku municipality on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Anaaba Akologo, 42, Lukman Seidu, 21 and Asana Habib, 26, and a nursing mother.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku, the Municipal Coordinator of National Disaster and Management Organisation, Mr Abdulai Tawiah, said in the course of the rainstorm, lightning struck a thatch house at Anisii village while Akologo and Seidu were asleep. The house caught fire and burnt the two to death. Mr Tawiah said Asana was also struck while she was harvesting water with a baby trapped at her back. However, the baby escaped survived unhurt.

Meanwhile more than 250 houses in the municipality had their roofs ripped off and over 100 people displaced by the rainstorm. The rainstorm also damaged some schools, forcing the authorities to arrange makeshift classes.
