Light won’t be back by 10am – ECG contradicts GRIDCo

The Electricity Company of Ghana has said claims by the Ghana Grid Company that power will be restored by 10am today is not feasible.

The CEO of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Ing. William Amuna told Morning Starr Thursday that “hopefully by 10am” the massive blackout that hit the entire country Wednesday night would have been fixed.

According to him, GRIDCo is about 70 percent through with restoration of the power.

But the deputy PRO for the ECG Daniel Adjei-Larbi said it will take sometime before power could be adequately distributed even if the problem is resolved from GRIDCo’s end.

“By evening, we would have restored power supply. The 10am is not exactly feasible because they (GRIDCo) would give us the power supply but we need to take it through the transmission lines,” he told host of Morning Starr Francis Abban.

Majority of Ghanaians went to bed without power Wednesday evening after what appeared to be a nationwide blackout hit the West African nation.

The lights went off around 9pm GMT.

The last time a nationwide blackout hit Ghana was in January 2016 as a result of system failure.

The Electricity Company of Ghana has blamed the nationwide power outage being experienced in the country on the loss of power supply from GRIDCo.

As of Thursday morning, several parts of the country are still without power.

Speaking to Starr News on the development, the PRO for the ECG William Boateng said they lost the feed from GRIDCo unexpectedly.

Ing. Amuna however explained that the power outage was caused by some disturbances in the power system around 9pm Wednesday resulting in some generators in the country going off.

According to him, the problem is being fixed and that they are “about 70 percent through with the restoration” and that they “hope that by 10am everyone should have power.”
