The international conference of librarians held in Windhoek, Namibia has ended. The conference, July 20-22, was attended by experts drawn from all over Africa including Ghana. Ghana’s Second Lady, Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur and Madam Helena Asamoah Hassan former KNUST Librarian participated in the conference.
The conference deliberated on the significance of libraries in development and their relevance to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), successor to the MDGs. Mrs. Amissah-Arthur reported that a draft strategic document had been prepared, which would be presented to the International Federation of Library Associations (IFPLA) for further action. If adopted, it would serve as a template for all member Associations.
The Ghanaian Second Lady was Guest of Honour at an end-of-conference dinner hosted by Namibian First Lady Monica Geingos, which was also attended by the Namibian Minister of Education, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa and Dr. Hage Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia,.
Mrs. Amissah-Arthur called on African governments to provide the necessary resources for the development of library services. She left for home on the morning of Thursday July 23 2015.
