Liberian granted 20 million cedis bail for stealing

Tema, April 2, GNA- A Liberian who went to cash a stolen cheque at the Standard Chartered Bank on the Spintex road, has been granted 20 million cedis bail by the Tema circuit court “B”. Harrison Freeman pleaded not guilty to dishonestly receiving and attempted stealing. He is to reappear on April 14.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor told the court presided over by Mr S.K. Teye that in 2002, a customer of Standard Chartered Bank on Spintex road reported his missing cheque book. She said on February 5, 2004, someone cashed four million cedis from his account, and the customer detected the shortage in his account at the bank, and made a report to the and directed the bank to stop any payment with cheques.

On February 12, this year, some one went to the bank with one of the stolen cheques with a face value of 15 million cedis, and when he was asked to see the manager, he managed to sneak out of the bank premises. Chief Inspector Nutakor said on March 26, Freeman who claimed to be a music director of World Miracle Church, went to the bank with a leaf of the stolen cheque book with a face value of six million cedis to cash. He was invited to the manager’s office and questioned as to who gave him the cheque. Freeman mentioned Ibrahim Tetteh Akunor as the one who gave him the cheque to cash on his behalf.

Tetteh was later identified to police at the charge office when he visited Freeman. In the course of investigations, it was found that Freeman and Tetteh went to the bank, but Tetteh waited outside. Freeman never mentioned his name, until the following day. Meanwhile the court had issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Tetteh.
