H.E Mr. Isaac Osei, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK has called on Ghanaians to re-dedicate themselves to the cause of the country.
He said the nation would be a better place if Ghanaians re-dedicated themselves to the core values of our culture and traditions, respect for elders and views of one another.
Speaking at a dinner-dance to commemorate Ghana’s 47th independence anniversary organised by the Ghana Union in London, Mr. Osei asked Ghanaians to continue to work together to ensure the deepening of our democratic culture
He said “democracy is not only the best form of government but gives us the freedom which our forefathers fought and died for”.
The dinner-dance, interspersed with culture drumming and dance, was attended by a cross section of Ghanaians in the UK including professionals, chiefs, opinion leaders and friends of Ghana.
High Commissioner noted that the attainment of “independence guarantees the country’s freedom while democracy fosters individual freedom which is vital for growth and development”.
Central to these was the need for Ghanaians to “pledge never to be ruled by the gun, by force, by unlawful means and with impunity”
He regretted that although the nation had attained political status, certain goals such as good jobs and remuneration, access to education, availability of health facilities and the security of the people to work in peace, were yet to be realised.
He submitted that it was through democracy underpinned by the rule of law that the enabling environment would be created to generate wealth to keep the people in employment.
Mr. Osei praised the contributions of the country’s forefathers notably the “Big Six” Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, Private Nii Odartey Lamptey and Nii Kwabena Bonnie for laying down their lives for our dear country.
He used the occasion to formally launch a new project for the Ghanaian community in the UK- The Ten Pounds To Save A Life is in support of the work of Dr. Frimpong Boateng at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital
Under the scheme every Ghanaian living in the UK would be expected to contribute at least ten pounds to the fund
Mr. Ima Plahar, President of the Ghana Union in his welcome address was optimistic that the country would in the not too distant future regain its past glory.
He added that it was incumbent on Ghanaians to work towards the building of a buoyant country for the future generation.
