‘Let’s rally to develop Akpafu-Menpeasem SHS’

Nana Kofi Adu II, Chief of Akpafu Todzi, in the North Hohoe District of the Volta Region, has called on indigenes of the area to assist in developing the only community senior high technical school in the area.

He said community ownership of schools and teacher motivation were crucial in the development of quality education, hence the call.

Nana Kofi Adu, who made the call at the launch of the 25th celebration of the Akpafu SHS, said it is untrue that students posted to the school perform poorly and urged students to take their studies seriously

The event was on the theme: “Quality Education- A basis for National Development”

He appealed to the parents to invest in the education of their children.

Reverend Jonathan Bettey, Public Relation Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), said it is the intention of government to equip students with technical and life skills.

He said this would help students to adjust to life situations and help them create employable avenues.

“This is why courses like Building and Construction ,Wood and Metal Works, Food and Nutrition, Clothing, Textiles and Management featured so prominently on the programmes of many institutions alongside other courses in the General Arts, Business and Agricultural Science”.

Reverend Bettey said government would continue to resource schools and empower teachers saying “the commencement of the free SHS education programme of which Akpafu was a beneficiary, was not to expand access but to improve the quality of education.

He urged school heads to stop charging unauthorised fees saying “school could devise other means of generating revenue such as organising home coming for old students”.

Madam Edna Azameti, Headmistress of Akpafu SHS, said quality teaching and learning was not the responsibility of teachers alone, but also parents and communities, therefore, there was the need for them to supervise their wards when they come home.
