Let’s put premium on the safety of vehicles – NRSC

Noble John Appiah, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has appealed to commercial transport drivers to regularly undertake systems audit to ensure that their vehicles stay in good condition.

He said they should ensure that all safety devices are functional to prevent accidents. Mr Appiah said this when he led a team of officials from the NRSC to visit some commercial road transport associations in Kumasi to acquaint themselves with their operational challenges.

He said disregard for safety standards and quality assurance are mainly to be blamed for most of the road traffic crashes and its attendant fatalities.

Mr Appiah expressed worry about the safety profile of some of the commercial transport operators saying they needed to improve their profile.

Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, Ashanti Regional Manager of the NRSC, said the expectation is that drivers would do everything to help reduce the carnage on the roads.

He said needed to maintain discipline and observe road traffic regulations. Mr Boakye urged management of the transport associations to liaise with the National Drivers Academy and introduce refresher training programmes for drivers.

He also urged the general public to demand responsibility from road safety implementing agencies.

Mr Suley Adams, First Trustee of the Neoplan branch of the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU), called for a sustained road safety education.
