Presidential Staffer, Kojo Adu Asare has added his voice to calls on President John Dramani Mahama to exercise his discretionary power under Article 72 in the Montie FM saga.
Contributing to Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” Friday, Adu Asare noted that the President, in exercising his powers to pardon the three convicts; Salifu Maase alias Mugabe, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako-Gunn, will not be undermining the Supreme Court.
According to him, the Supreme Court Judges finished their business by sentencing the contemnors and handing them over to the Police for their jail term to begin.
Adu Asare therefore believes whatever decision the President takes “is not because he intends to spite any judge or to disrespect any court. It is for him to play his role as a President. He can have mercy on whom he wants to have mercy. He can have compassion on whom he wants to have compassion. It doesn’t take any Judge to determine who the President should have compassion or mercy or clemency on.”
To him, it’s the turn of President John Mahama to also do his job by choosing to grant the convicts Presidential clemency or not.
He asked critics to leave the President alone.
He also had a word for the Judges, saying “if they think they can be their own Police, Prosecution, Jury and Judges on their own case as is being argued by some lawyers and if that judgment and their conscience proved them right; it is up to them. If they feel they did what they did with all the genuineness and the fairness that is required, it’s up to them. I believe that they also have conscience….Sometimes, we make mistakes in our decisions and so on. So, whatever it takes; we will leave their conscience to handle them as it is.”
